Evie.

Jake had called his AA sponsor, but she’s out of town, and then Jackson hadn’t picked up and then I hadn’t picked up. I am so, so glad that he didn’t drink last night, that he answered my call instead. We stayed up most of the night, talking through things. It seems that our father lit into him when he saw Jackson leaving our apartment yesterday morning. Come to find out, he and Suzi had started dating just before our Sunday dinner, and she told him that she would not date a homophobe, and now my father is blaming us for tanking his love life.

Welp, too damned bad.

“Hey, Pops,” I say, striding into his office at 8:01 a.m.

“I’m not speaking to either of you,” he says, swiveling his chair away from the door.

I mean, does he not know me at all?

“Yeah, that’s not going to cut it. A) I can still see you, 2) you’re being a gigantic jerk and embarrassing the memory of our mother with your terrible attitude, and third of all, the son who you love so much that you sent him to a $45,000 treatment center almost drank last night after your little stunt.”

He swivels back in my direction. “It’s not my attitude, it’s God’s. If you don’t like it, take it up with Him. And… if Jake drinks that’s on him.”

“Yes, it is on him. Thing is, if you’re bad for his sobriety and his overall happiness, you’re not really bringing much to the table now, are you? And if you’re happy to be sidelined as he walks down the extraordinarily difficult path to recover from whatever has happened to him, and especially if you are actively hurting his sobriety, then you will lose him forever. And me, right along with him. You could be part of the solution, help him to talk about whatever got him here, but instead you choose to pick on something that is none of your business. It’s none of your business, Dad, and you’ve got to let it go, or you will lose both of us. And if you think that Spence won’t take his twin brother’s side, then you don’t know Spence at all.”

“The Bible says—”

“The Bible can kiss my grits, Dad, ’cause it’s not helping him right now. The only big book that’s been of any use to him in the last year has twelve steps and a room full of drunks to recommend itself. If you want to use your book and your faith to bludgeon my brother while he is down, then all that does is confirm my suspicions.”

“How dare you—”

“How dare I? I’m not the one running around like a Pharisee,” I say, using a biblical reference I know he’ll get. “All pumped up on piety. Using a showy display of faith, rather than the humble offerings of service. God doesn’t need you to treat your son like shit to show him that you love him. If you want to claim Jesus, then you’d best remember that he gave us two commandments.
